Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the English short version of our website „Pergamena illuminata“, which includes a presentation of our medieval reenactment activities and information on the production of real parchment and vellum made from the skin of calves, goats and sheep.
At various living-history events like medieval markets or museum presentations, we demonstrate the handicraft of parchment makers and book illuminators as they could have worked 800 years ago. We use only traditional means and methods as they have been passed down to us by medieval authors like Theophilus Presbyter. Our presentation includes the de-fleshing and de-hairing of a raw skin that comes directly from the lime milk, where it has been soaked for two or three weeks previously. The skin is subsequently dried on a wooden frame, polished with pumis and cut out of the frame. The illuminatress then prepares the parchment for painting. Fine initial letters and illustrations with luminescent inks are brought to brilliant life using traditional means and recipes.
We have often been asked whether we could also supply our parchment and vellum to scribes, illuminators or restorers of antique books and documents. So we decided to produce a limited amount of parchment and vellum from the skins of sheep, goats and calves at home. We have clients in Germany, Switzerland and Canada, among others.
If you are interested in our presentation or in buying some of our products, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail. We will then send you our stock list of parchment or – in the event you are interested in our presentation – some photos and more detailed information.
